Straight After Treatment: What's Normal
Immediately after your session, it's completely normal for the treated area to look red, swollen, and feel tender or sensitive — this typically settles within a few hours to a few days, depending on your skin and the size of the area treated.
You may also notice a whitish "frosting" appear on the skin during treatment itself. This isn't a burn — it's a positive sign that the laser is breaking down ink particles in the skin, and it usually fades within 10–15 minutes after your session ends.
Swelling, Blistering & Minor Bleeding
Some swelling and minor pinpoint bleeding in the treated area is common in the hours after a session. To manage it: apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth or towel to the area for 10–15 minutes at a time (never apply ice directly to skin), and keep the treated area elevated above heart level where possible to help reduce swelling.
Blisters can also appear over the days following treatment — and while it might look alarming, this is actually a positive sign your skin is healing correctly. Treat them gently: keep the area clean, avoid soaking it in baths or hot tubs, and never pop or pick at a blister. Let it heal and resolve naturally on its own.
Your First-Week Routine
- Treat it like a burn. Apply aloe vera gel for at least the first couple of days to cool and soothe the skin.
- Clean gently. Use warm water only — avoid soap, perfumed products, and other irritants on the treated area.
- Don't pick. Leave scabs and blisters completely alone, however tempting — picking delays healing and increases infection risk.
- Skip the heat. Avoid saunas, jacuzzis and hot baths until the area is fully healed.
- Cover and protect. Keep the area covered with clothing or use a high-SPF sunscreen, and avoid direct sun exposure entirely until healing is complete — sun exposure on treated skin increases the risk of pigmentation changes.
When to Get In Touch
Most healing follows a predictable pattern, but if you notice anything that doesn't seem right — increasing pain rather than improving, spreading redness, pus or discharge, or a fever — these can be signs of infection and are worth getting checked quickly rather than waiting. Please contact your GP for medical advice, and let Ink Erase know too, so we can support you and adjust your treatment plan if needed.
Mild skin tone changes (lightening or darkening) in the treated area are a normal part of the healing process for some clients, and usually resolve naturally within 3–12 months. We cover this — along with full aftercare instructions tailored to your treatment — after every session.
